Alcohol & breast cancer stories worthy of lining the bird cage

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:31:46 PDT
I should have mentioned Sandy Szwarc's blog, Junkfood Science, long ago. I am impressed by the depth and thoroughness of her analysis. This week she jumped all over news coverage of a study linking alcohol intake to breast cancer. You should read the entire post, but it begins: Does a single drink a day really raise a woman’s risk for breast cancers? That’s what 403 media stories (and counting) have been reporting, based on a new study said to be “the largest of its kind.” But not all stud

American Idol: Kristy Lee Cook Made Simon Cowell Feel Awkward

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:32:57 PDT
American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook had several memorable moments on the show. In addition to her performances, Kristy Lee will likely be remembered for some of her comments to American Idol judge Simon Cowell. After Simon Cowell compared Kristy Lee’s performance of “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” to “musical wallpaper,” Kristy Lee told Simon, “I can blow you out of your socks and you know it.” Both host Ryan Seacrest and the American Idol judges got quite a bit of amusement out of the

Saturday Morning Garden Blogging

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:33:19 PDT
As Herding Old Cats reminded us last weekend, it's Springtime in Alabama! We all enjoyed posting and viewing each other's photos so much that we're launching a new Saturday morning feature: Home and Garden Blogging. It's both an open thread and (hopefully) welcome respite from the frustration and spectacle of state and national politics. We're hoping that various LIA members will take turns posting the diary on Saturdays. It's a little problematic for me. I try to stay off the computer on Sa

MODERATORS: CHARLIE GIBSON, ABC NEWS GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC NEWS ..] STEPHANOPOULOS: Proceed. Fatah Female Terrorist Suspects impersonate the Former Hamas

Fatah Female terrorist suspects impersonate the Former Hamas, during an alleged protest against Jewish siege of the Gaza Strip near the Erez crossing in the north of the territory on 19 April 2008. This looks like just another media photo-op and these women are insulting the former Hamas. Their actually is no longer an organization known as Hamas in Palestine and furthermore, the people that was the former Hamas are living happy peaceful lives with their Jewish neighbors. While Fatah continu

Did you also know that when Video Marketplace weekly appears on Saturday instead of its normal Friday time slot, it's usually due to the writer forgetting totally about it? It's interesting and true. Possible hate crime in Salt Lake City.

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:10:37 PDT
Man gets dragged out of his car and beaten by 8 white males. The news clip said his head was stomped on the curb. This story practically got nil coverage, maybe a 30 second spot on the news. Apparently Utah'ns are more worried about polygamous sects in TX than they are about hate crimes in their own state. FYI this has happened here before.

Where Are the Softballs?

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:24:53 PDT
It occurs to me I should probably cite an example of what’s called out in the post previous. The left half of the blogosphere, criticizing the right half with an unflattering and snarky Election-Season Guide, fails to note the beam in its own eye as it points out the brother’s mote. Liberals are so funny…They’ve always been, in my lifetime, confused about whether an allegation or value system is shown to be lacking in merit because of who believes in it, or whether the personalities are shown

keeping an ‘eye’ on your kids

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was driving around with a GPS device connected to my car windscreen. I don’t use it when I’m in familiar territory but it’s a great little device to have at my beck and call since I have a knack for losing my way . My GPS will come in handy when my son learns to drive soon. I figure it’ll be a matter of time before we’re going to need to find some way to keep track of where he’s at when he takes the car out for a spin. Or even just to help him find his way around

Silly Saturday: Stupid Questions

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 06:27:40 PDT
Remember that scene from "Wolf," where the doctor tells Jack Nicholson about the kid who was bitten by a snake and suffered brain damage? Then Nicholson asks, "Is he OK?" And the doctor says, "No, you idiot. He has brain damage." How many stupid questions do you hear on a daily basis? My all-time favorite: Back when I was a teacher, a student asked me, "How do you say bon voyage in French?" Not kidding. True story. OK. One more: Sometimes, when you share a classroom, you find the last te
